Prepare the wall before installation
Proper wall preparation is essential to ensure a successful result.
Before hanging your wallpaper :
- Make sure the walls are clean, dry, and smooth
- Remove any imperfections
- Apply a primer if necessary
Then use a level. This step is essential to ensure the pattern is properly aligned.
Equipment needed to hang pre-pasted wallpaper
To install your wallpaper in the best conditions, prepare the following:
- A utility knife
- A level
- A sponge or a spray bottle
- A seam roller (wallpaper roller)
- A smoothing tool (wallpaper spatula)
With this equipment, you’ll be able to hang your wallpaper strips with precision.
How to hang pre-pasted wallpaper step by step
In our workshops, we recommend a 4-step installation process to ensure a precise and aesthetically pleasing result.
1. Check and prepare the strips (drops)
Before starting, lay out your wallpaper strips on the floor in order, from left to right.
Carefully check:
- The numbering of the strips
- The pattern matching
- The colours
2. Mark your guidelines on the wall
Using a plumb line, draw a perfectly straight vertical line on your wall.
This line should match the width of one wallpaper strip and will serve as your guide.
Proper alignment from the start is key to a successful installation, especially for panoramic or repeating patterns.
3. Activate the adhesive and hang the first strip
Dampen the back of the wallpaper with water, making sure to cover the entire surface, including the edges, in order to activate the pre-pasted adhesive.
Then position your strip at the top of the wall. Carefully smooth it from the centre outward to remove air bubbles and ensure proper adhesion.
4. Hang the remaining strips and finish
Apply the next strips edge to edge, making sure to carefully match the pattern. Repeat the process across the entire surface.
Once installation is complete and fully dry :
- Run a wallpaper seam roller along the edges
- Trim the excess at the top and bottom using a utility knife
These finishing touches ensure a clean and polished result.
Tips for a successful, flawless installation
- Work in good lighting
- Check pattern alignment at every step
- Take your time with the first strip
Common mistakes to avoid
Even though installation is simplified, some mistakes can affect the final result :
- Poorly prepared wall
- Incorrect alignment of the first strip
- Inaccurate pattern matching
- Improper activation of the adhesive
These issues are especially noticeable on panoramic or patterned wallpapers, where design continuity is essential.
What are the common mistakes when hanging wallpaper?
The most frequent mistakes relate to preparation and alignment:
- A poorly prepared wall (uneven, damp, or dusty)
- Misalignment of the first strip, which causes shifting throughout the installation
- Inaccurate pattern matching, highly visible on panoramic designs
- Poor activation of the adhesive, which may lead to peeling
To avoid these issues, it is essential to take time to properly prepare the surface, draw precise guidelines, and carefully check each step during installation.
